1890‐1960 British astronomer. He was elected a fellow at Cambridge University in 1913, and in the same year succeeded AS Eddington as chief assistant at the Greenwich Observatory. In 1923 he became director of the Cape Observatory in South Africa, and served as director of Greenwich Observatory from 1933 until his retirement in 1955. He directed many of the routine work at the observatory related to positional astronomy, but his own most notable research is that of the Earth's rotational speed (1931).
