…The calendar for the Lateran Basilica, which is the prototype of today's church holiday table, was written as early as 354. The biographies of saints were originally called legendas (meaning "something to be read") because they were read aloud in churches to inspire faith, but they gradually became more narrative through the emphasis on miracle stories, and so they tended to become legendas (legends). The Golden Legend (Legenda Aurea), compiled by the Archbishop of Genoa Jacobus de Voragine in the 13th century, is the culmination of this collection. …
