...The Indian Ganessa elephant S. ganesa and the Chinese Yellow River elephant S. humghoemsis from the early Pliocene were extremely large, measuring 3m in shoulder height and 2.5m in tusk length. The Japanese elephant S. cf. elephantoides and S. cf. bombifrons from the same period were also large and are considered to be closely related to those found in India and Myanmar. The fossils of the Akashi elephant S. (= Parastegodon ) akashiensis from the early Pleistocene have been found in large numbers on the seabed of the Seto Inland Sea and in surrounding areas, but they were only about 2m in shoulder height and had tusks about 1.5m long. ...
