A horticultural term for the spherical underground reproductive organs of perennial plants, including the following varieties (→ potatoes): (1) bulb: A short underground stem with fleshy, fleshy scale leaves that store nutrients and are tightly attached around it. As in lilies and tulips. (2) tuber: An underground stem that swells and produces buds here and there. As in potatoes. (3) corm; solid bulb: A stem that becomes spherical at the base and produces thin leaf sheaths that are the result of bud transformation. As in gladiolus and water chestnuts. (4) tuberous root: A root that stores nutrients and swells. As in dahlias. (5) pseudobulb: A leaf stalk or short branch that swells and envelops the stem. As in cattleyas.
