[noun] 1. Buddhist term. The procession of monks and nuns circling around statues and temples of Buddha while reciting sutras. Also, the ceremony involved. *Ryōiki (810-824), part 2: "They place utensils on their hands, burn incense, perform the procession, and recite Dharani." [Nankai Kiki Naihoden - 3] 2. Monks and nuns walking while chanting sutras. Walking along the road while reciting sutras. *Shoku Nihongi - Jinki 5th year (728), August Koshin: "The crown prince was ill in bed. (omitted) He turned to the Buddha for a sutra ceremony and performed the procession for a day. Due to the merit of this , he hoped to regain his peace . " 3. To practice Buddhism. ※Instructions of Toganoo Myoe (1238): " By chance, I was given a human body, and fortunately was able to wear a robe. I entered the Buddhist teachings and called myself a pilgrim." [The Sutra of Immeasurable Life, Volume 2] ④ A person or thing going round and round in the same place. Also, the path that it goes round. ※ Genpei Jōsuiki (before the 14th century), Chapter 4, 5: "The emperor was going round and round along the borders of his house ."
