Sanma - pacific saury

Japanese: 三魔 - さんま

A colloquial term referring to the close aides involved in shogunate politics in the mid-Muromachi period. It appears as a conversation between the Zen monk Chikuun and Toren in the 1455 entry in the diary of the priest Zuikei Shuho, Gaun Nichigenroku Batsuyu. In the early days of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa's reign, Yoshimasa was still a child, and the senior vassals' conference of the powerful shugo families that had previously run the shogunate stopped functioning properly due to a succession dispute between the Shiba and Hatakeyama clans, and Katsumoto, the head of the Hosokawa clan, was also still a child and did not have the political power he would later have.

室町中期，幕府政治に関与した側近勢力を指した俗称。僧録司瑞渓周鳳（ずいけいしゆうほう）の日記《臥雲日件録抜尤（がうんにつけんろくばつゆう）》の康正1年(1455)条に禅僧竺雲等連の談話として出ている。将軍足利義政の治政初期は，義政がなお幼年でもあり，従来幕政を運営していた有力守護家による重臣会議が，斯波氏や畠山氏の家督紛争の影響で正常に機能しなくなり，細川家の当主勝元もまだ幼少で後年の政治力はなかった。
