An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Lasiocampidae (illustration). The adult is a fairly large moth with the color of dead leaves, and when it is at rest with its wings folded in a roof shape, it also looks similar to dead leaves. The wingspan is about 4cm for males and about 7cm for females. The larvae are large caterpillars with stinging hairs that are attached to tree trunks and other surfaces when they mature and create cocoons. They parasitize many plants, including peaches, plums, cherry trees, pears, and apples. They are found throughout most of Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and southeastern Siberia, and adults often fly to lights. The Lasiocampidae family is a medium to large-sized moth found throughout most of the world, with many species especially in the tropics.
