In addition to Polyphemus, his children included Triton, the half-man, half-fish god he had with his wife Amphitrite (the daughter of Nereus, the ancient god of the sea), Pegasus, the winged horse whose mother was Medusa, a female gorgon, and Orion, the giant hunter. His name probably means "husband of the earth" or "lord of the earth," and as his names in Homer's epic poems such as Enosichthōn ("earth shaker") and Gaieochos ("earth preserver") indicate, he was originally the god of earthquakes and of rivers and springs that fertilize the soil, but when worshippers of this god invaded Greece, it is thought that the sea became his domain. …
