Year of death: February 6, 1611 (March 20, 1611) Year of birth: Tenbun 21 (1552) An artillery expert from the early Edo period. Sometimes read as "Inatomi." His given name was Ienao, Naoie, and later Sukenao. He was famous under the name Inatomi Kazumu. His father was Naohide. He was from Tango Province (Kyoto Prefecture) and initially served Isshiki Yoshisada, but later served Hosokawa Tadaoki and was highly valued. His grandfather Naotoki learned artillery from Sasaki Shosuke Jiro Yoshikuni, who was known as a master of firearms, and passed it on to Sukenao. Furthermore, Sukenao is said to have made improvements to the composition of gunpowder and firing position based on the dreams he had while retreating to Chion-ji Temple in Tango Province (Miyazu City), and founded the Inatomi school of artillery. He is known for crossing the sea as a member of Hosokawa Tadaoki's army during the Keicho War (1597), and for his active participation alongside Kato Kiyomasa in the siege of Ulsan. However, during the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, he was ordered to guard the house of Tadaoki, who had gone to attack the Uesugi clan, but he was unable to protect Tadaoki's wife Gracia, causing her to commit suicide. Ogasawara Shosai and Kawakita Iwami, who were also in charge of guarding the house, committed suicide in honor of their wives, but Sukenao fled and was pursued by Tadaoki. Sukenao was initially hidden by his gunnery disciple Ii Naomasa, and then he asked for his life through Asano Yukinaga, but was not allowed to do so. In the end, he asked for help from Tokugawa Ieyasu, who granted him permission, and he became the gunnery instructor for Ieyasu's fourth son Matsudaira Tadayoshi and ninth son Tokugawa Yoshinao. Around that time, he became a monk and took the name Ichimu. After that, he made great achievements, such as organizing the Kunitomo blacksmith group in Omi as the shogunate's gunner. He openly taught the secrets of gunnery to those who had joined the school, and left behind a handwritten instruction book that is considered to be the first gunnery book in Japan.
