Whale wax - spermaceti

It is the solid matter that precipitates after cooling oil extracted from the oil-storing tissue in the heads of toothed whales such as sperm whales and separating sperm oil. When mixed with an alkaline solution and boiled to refine it, it becomes a snow-white, odorless, waxy mass. Melting point: 40-50°C. The main component is cetyl palmitate C 15 H 31 CO 2 C 16 H 33 , with small amounts of esters of fatty acids (lauric acid, myristic acid, etc.) and alcohols (stearyl alcohol, etc.) and glycerides. マッコウクジラなどのハ(歯)クジラ類の頭部の貯油組織から得た油を冷却し，マッコウ鯨油を分離後，析出した固形分。アルカリ液と混合，煮沸して精製すると雪白色無臭の蠟状の塊となる。融点40～50℃。主成分はパルミチン酸セチルエステルC15H31CO2C16H33で，ほかに少量の脂肪酸(ラウリン酸，ミリスチン酸など)とアルコール(ステアリルアルコールなど)とのエステル，グリセリドを含む。軟膏や化粧クリームの硬度調整のための基剤などに用いられた。
