Darlington

Japanese: ダーリントン(英語表記)Darlington
Darlington
A city in the northeast of England, United Kingdom. A unitary authority. In 1997, it was separated from County Durham to become a unitary authority. It is located about 50 km south of Newcastle upon Tyne, on the River Scarne near its confluence with the River Tees. The town began as a Saxon settlement and was known for the manufacture of textiles such as linen and worsted fabrics. In 1825, the world's first passenger train between Stockton-on-Tees, 15 km east-northeast, was operated by a joint venture between George Stephenson and Edward Pease. Since then, industries such as locomotive manufacturing and railway repair have developed, and the manufacture of heavy machinery related to railways and construction has flourished. In addition to heavy industry, communications and service industries are also important. The world's first locomotive to pull a train on a commercial railway, "Locomotive No. 1", is on display at Bank Top Station. The city is generally modern, but St. Cuthbert Cathedral, founded in the 12th century, remains. The unitary authority area is 198 km2 . Urban population: 86,082 (2001). Municipal population: 99,200 (2005 est.).
