A deciduous shrub or small tree of the Rutaceae family cultivated for medicinal purposes, reaching a height of 3-10 m. It is cultivated throughout Japan, but only female plants are cultivated in Japan. The plant is densely covered with long, pale yellowish brown hairs. The leaves are opposite, odd-pinnate, compound, and 16-32 cm long. There are 5-9 opposite leaflets, elliptical or oval, 6-15 cm long, with no or unclear blunt sawtooth edges, and glandular dots on the underside. In early summer, short panicles are produced at the ends of the branches, bearing small greenish-white flowers. The plant is dioecious, and the flowers are pentamerous. 薬用のために栽培されるミカン科の落葉低木または小高木で高さ3~10mに達する。日本の各地で栽培されているが,日本には雌株しか栽培されていない。全体に淡黄褐色の長柔毛を密生する。葉は対生し,奇数羽状複葉,長さ16~32cm。小葉は5~9個で対生し,楕円形ないし卵形,長さ6~15cm,ふちに鋸歯がないか,または不明の鈍鋸歯があり,裏面に腺点を有する。初夏,枝先に短い円錐花序を出し緑白色の小花をつける。雌雄異株で,花は5数性。
