Iwakura Style

A surviving school of Japanese swimming. One of the three Kishu schools, it began in 1710 (7th year of the Hoei period) when Iwakura Gosuke Shigemasa, a samurai of the Kii Tokugawa clan, was asked to take care of the swimming skills of the various warriors. The Iwakura school was also known as Kawakami-ue when the head of the school moved to the Kawakami family. In July 1906 (39th year of the Meiji period), the three Kishu schools were integrated into the Wakayama branch swimming department of the Dai Nippon Butoku-kai. After that, the Nojima and Koike schools left Wakayama and moved to other places (Osaka, Nagoya, etc.), but the Iwakura school remained in Wakayama. The swimming style is mainly based on frog legs, and is very similar to the Nojima and Koike styles, and includes breaststroke, nukite, nikaki, inatobi, kakiwake, sui-ri nikaki, and standing swim. The Iwakura style has a book called "Iwakura style swimming technique book".

現存する日本泳法の一流派。紀州三流派の一つで、1710年（宝永7）紀伊徳川藩士の岩倉郷助重昌(ごうすけしげまさ)が、諸士水芸世話を仰せ付かったのに始まる。岩倉流は、家元が川上家に移った一時期、川上流と称したこともあった。1906年（明治39）7月に紀州三流派は大日本武徳会和歌山支部水練部として統合された。その後、能島(のじま)、小池の2流派は和歌山を離れ他の地（大阪、名古屋など）に移ったが、岩倉流は和歌山にとどまった。泳法は蛙足(かえるあし)を主体としており、能島流、小池流によく似た泳法で、平泳、抜手、二ッ掻(かき)、鰡飛(いなとび)、掻分(かきわけ)、水入(すいり)鰡飛、立泳などがある。岩倉流の伝書には『岩倉流遊泳術書』がある。
