740‐828 Arab writer and philologist. His real name was Ibn Kharib, but he was given the name Asma'i (storyteller) because he recounted many ancient stories. He was born in Basra, a descendant of the Qays tribe, and later moved to Baghdad. He had a strong memory and memorized 12,000 lines of ancient poetry in the Razzaz style, and he never let go of 18 boxes of books. Of his more than 40 books, about 13 remain, most of which are poems and those related to the origins of the names of plants and animals. The Asma'iyyat Poems is particularly famous as a collection of ancient poetry. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
