Capital of the Moselle department in northeastern France. A river port city on the banks of the Moselle River. In German, it is called Metz. It is about 320 km east of Paris and a strategic military location on the Franco-German border. The automobile industry is thriving, as are the metal and malt industries. It is an ancient Roman fortress and has a Gothic cathedral from the 13th and 14th centuries. It was French territory in 1552 and German territory from 1871 to 1918.
