MBS - MBS

Abbreviation for the American broadcasting company Mutual Broadcasting System. MBS was an American commercial radio network that was established in 1934 and continued in existence until 1999, and was once one of the four major radio networks in the United States. The period from 1930 to 1950 is called the Golden Age of Radio in the United States, and the program "The Lone Ranger," which began broadcasting on MBS in January 1934, is said to be a symbol of that time. The program later moved from MBS to another network and was broadcast until 1954.

MBS was the first radio network to broadcast Major League Baseball games, and in the decade from the mid-1930s, it gained a reputation for its news and news commentary programs. When it was first established, it was an organization established by several local radio stations, and all network operations such as program production, transmission, and advertising sales were jointly managed, and revenues were shared, which was a different structure from a typical radio network. In December 1936, MBS secured affiliated stations (affiliated stations) that could cover the entire United States, but after it was acquired by General Tire (now Continental Tire North America) in 1957, its radio business activities lost their appeal, and in 1985 it was sold to radio program distribution company Westwood One. At the time of the sale, it had 700 affiliated stations.
