With recent advances in computer technology, it has become possible to go beyond mere databases to provide the information necessary for business management accurately, quickly, and efficiently. Systems that include not only quantitative information but also qualitative information are sometimes called marketing information systems (MKIS). In the future, there will be a demand to expand information systems, such as by enriching information from different industries to accommodate the diversification of management. In particular, it will be necessary to prepare a mechanism that can respond quickly by linking with POS systems and other systems in order to accurately grasp the ever-changing purchasing behavior of consumers.

経営情報システム。企業の経営・管理などの意思決定に必要な情報を収集・分析するためのシステムのこと。近年コンピュータ技術の進歩により、単なるデータベースとしての役割から、企業経営に必要な情報を正確・迅速、しかも効率的に供給することが可能となった。また、定量的な情報だけでなく、定性的な情報を含めたシステムを特にマーケティング情報システム（MKIS）と呼ぶ場合もある。今後は、経営の多角化に対応するための異業種情報の充実など、情報体系の拡大が求められてくる。特に刻々と変化する消費者購買行動を的確に把握するためにPOSシステムなどと連動して、迅速に対応することができるような仕組みを準備する必要がある。
