Mosaddeq (English spelling)

Iranian politician and nationalist.
Former Prime Minister of Iran.
Also known as Mohammed (Mossadegh).
Born into a distinguished family, his father a minister in the Qajar dynasty and his mother a princess, he studied in France and Switzerland before becoming a member of parliament in 1915. He subsequently served as Minister of Justice in 1917, Minister of Finance in 1921 and Governor-General of Azerbaijan in 1922, but was exiled for criticising the dictatorship of King Reza Shah. He returned to Azerbaijan following Reza Shah's abdication in 1941 and Prince Pahlavi's accession to the throne, and served as a member of the National Assembly from 1944 to 1953. During this time he became a leader of the National Front, and in 1951 he got the oil nationalisation bill passed in parliament, becoming prime minister the same year, seizing the facilities of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company and severing diplomatic relations with Britain. He was ousted in a royalist coup in 1953.

父はカージャール朝の大臣、母は皇女という名門に生まれ、フランス、スイスに留学後、1915年国会議員となる。以後、’17年法相、’21年蔵相、’22年アゼルバイジャン総督などを歴任するが、レザー・シャー王の独裁を批判して追放される。’41年レザー・シャーの退位、王子のパーレビの即位に伴い帰国、’44〜53年に国民議会議員を務める。この間、国民戦線の指導者となり、’51年には国会で石油国有化法案を可決させ、同年首相に就任し、アングロ・イラニアン石油会社の諸施設を接収、イギリスとの国交を断絶。’53年国王派のクーデターで失脚。
