Nakajima

Japanese: 中島 - なかじま

An area facing the west bay of Nanao Bay in the central part of the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture. Former town name. In 1954, the villages of Nishigishi, Uwauchi, Kumaki, Nakajima, Toyokawa, and Kasashiho merged to form a town. In October 2004, it merged with the former Nanao City, Tazuruhama Town, and Notojima Town to form the new city of Nanao. Rice is the main crop, but the area also cultivates miscellaneous grains, vegetables, and fruits, produces shiitake mushrooms, and oyster farming is thriving along the coast. In recent years, livestock farming such as dairy cattle, beef cattle, and chicken farming has also been carried out. Efforts are being made to promote the synthetic fiber and electronics industries. The entire bay area belongs to the Noto Peninsula Quasi-National Park. In front of the shrine in the center is Kumagafutoarakashihiko Shrine (Kumako Shrine), and the "Kumako 20th Day Festival Frame Flag Event" (→Okumako Festival) held at the annual festival on September 20th is a nationally designated intangible folk cultural asset.

Nakajima

The former town area is located in northwest Ehime Prefecture and consists of more than 10 small islands, centered on Nakajima in the Kutsuna Islands. It was incorporated as a town in 1952. It was merged with Kannawa Village in 1959. Mutsuno Village was incorporated in 1960, and Nishinakajima Village in 1963. It was incorporated into Matsuyama City in 2005. During the Kamakura period, it was the base of the Kutsuna Navy (→Kutsuna clan). During the Edo period, it was divided and ruled by the Matsuyama Domain and the Ozu Domain. Cultivation of Unshu mandarins and Iyokan oranges is popular, and there is a large sorting facility on Nakajima. Fishing is the main industry on Tsuwaji Island and Futagami Island. The natural habitat of juniper on Futagami Island and the Chinese elm at Usa Hachiman Shrine are famous. It belongs to the Seto Inland Sea National Park. Regular ferries travel between the islands from Takahama Port in Matsuyama City on the opposite shore.

Nakajima

The main island of the Kutsuna Islands in northwest Ehime Prefecture. Its historical name was Kutsuna Island. It is part of Matsuyama City. In the Middle Ages, it was a manor of Emperor Goshirakawa. In the early Edo period, it was part of the Ozu Domain. In 1635, seven of the eleven settlements were exchanged for land for the Matsuyama Domain. Mandarin orange cultivation is thriving, and a sorting center and receiving facilities have been established. Part of it belongs to the Setonaikai National Park. Area: 21.12 ^km2 . Population: 4,263 (2000).

石川県の能登半島中央部，七尾湾西湾に面する地区。旧町名。 1954年西岸村，釶打村，熊木村，中島村，豊川村，笠師保村の6村が合体して町制。 2004年 10月，旧七尾市，田鶴浜町，能登島町と合併し，新市七尾市を設立。米作を主とするが，雑穀類，蔬菜，果実類を栽培，シイタケを産し，沿岸ではカキの養殖が盛ん。近年は乳牛，肉牛，養鶏などの畜産も行なわれる。合成繊維工業，電子工業などの振興がはかられている。湾岸部一帯は能登半島国定公園に属する。中央部の宮前に久麻加夫都阿良加志比古神社 (熊甲宮) があり，9月 20日の例大祭で行なわれる「熊甲二十日祭の枠旗行事」 (→お熊甲祭 ) は国の重要無形民俗文化財。

中島
なかじま

愛媛県北西部，忽那諸島の中島を中心に 10をこえる小島からなる旧町域。 1952年町制。 1959年神和村と合体。 1960年睦野村，1963年西中島村を編入。 2005年松山市に編入。鎌倉時代は忽那水軍 (→忽那氏 ) の根拠地。江戸時代は松山藩，大洲藩両藩が分割統治していた。温州みかん，伊予柑の栽培が盛んで，中島に大規模な選果場がある。津和地島，二神島では漁業が主。二神島にあるビャクシン自生地と宇佐八幡宮のイブキは有名。瀬戸内海国立公園に属する。対岸の松山市高浜港から各島々をめぐる定期船が通う。

中島
なかじま

愛媛県北西部，忽那諸島の主島。古称は忽那 (くつな) 島。松山市に属する。中世は後白河法皇の荘園であった。江戸時代初期は大洲藩領。寛永 12 (1635) 年 11集落中7集落を松山藩と替え地。ミカン栽培が盛んで，選果場，荷受施設が整備。一部は瀬戸内海国立公園に属する。面積 21.12km²。人口 4263 (2000) 。
