Emerson effect

This is an effect of enhancing photosynthesis that was discovered by the American plant physiologist Emerson R. Emerson (1903-1959) in his research into the light reaction of photosynthesis. This phenomenon refers to the fact that the efficiency of photosynthesis decreases at wavelengths longer than the red absorption wavelength of chlorophyll a, but high efficiency is obtained when monochromatic light on the shorter wavelength side is irradiated at the same time.

光合成の明反応の研究において、アメリカの植物生理学者エマーソンR. Emerson（1903―1959）が発見した、光合成の増進効果をいう。クロロフィルaの赤色部吸収波長より長波長側では、光合成効率が低下するが、同時に短波長側の単色光を照射すると、高い効率が得られる現象のことである。
