Emerson (1903-59) discovered that if light with wavelengths longer than the red absorption maximum of chlorophyll a (700 nm) is given to green plants and algae, the quantum yield of photosynthesis decreases (red drop), but if shorter wavelength light (650 nm for green plants and 575 nm for red algae) is also given at the same time, the photosynthetic rate becomes greater than the sum of the two when given alone (Emerson effect).
