Dates of birth and death unknown. He was an artist active during the mid-Heian period during the reign of Emperor Murakami (reigned 946-967), and passed away at the end of the 10th century. According to the "Murakami Tenno Goki," he painted the cover art for the sutra scroll for the Shinpitsu Hoke Hachiko (Eight Lectures on the Lotus Sutra) in 955 (Tenryaku 9), and the statue of King Shirataka in Seiryoden in 964 (Kōhō 1). In 972 (Tenroku 3), he also created figures of cows, horses, dogs, chickens, and other creatures for the year-end purification ceremony. In addition, "Eiga Monogatari" records that he also created folding screen paintings for the Imperial Court. His fame continued even after his death, and his name appears in works such as "The Tale of Genji." He was one of the leading artists of his time, and his work was epoch-making in the history of Heian painting.
