Indonesian Democratic Party (English name) Partai Demokrasi Indonesia

Indonesian Democratic Party (English name) Partai Demokrasi Indonesia
Abbreviation: PDI. An Indonesian political party. On January 10, 1973, the party was formed under the leadership of Suharto by five non-Islamic parties: the Indonesian National Party, the Indonesian Christian Party, the Catholic Party, the Indonesian Independence Defender League, and the Murba Party, in response to the momentum for party reorganization. In mid-February 1975, former Minister of Education and Culture Harjadinata was appointed as the party's general chairman. Among the five former parties that made up the party, the Indonesian National Party was the central force of the nationalist movement since 1927, and produced talented people such as Sukarno, and often took power after independence. In 1993, Sukarno's eldest daughter Megawati was made the party leader, and the party strengthened its anti-Golkar color, but the military's intervention led to the formation of a pro-Suharto faction, and the party split. In the 1997 general election, the Megawati faction, which was prohibited from running, boycotted the election and supported the Development Unity Party, resulting in a split.
