The most populated area is the area between the Nizhnyaya Tunguska and Podkamennaya Tunguska rivers, which are tributaries of the Yenisei. In 1930, the Evenki Ethnic District (767,600 km2 in area, renamed the Evenki Autonomous District in 1977) was established here.
