Pentastomida - Pentastomida

Japanese: 舌形動物 - ぜっけいどうぶつ(英語表記)Pentastomida
Pentastomida - Pentastomida
A general term for the species that form the phylum Glossomorpha, and their Japanese name is Shitamidushi-rui. They generally have a body length of around 1 cm, with larger species reaching 30-45 cm. They have a long, slender body shape consisting of 16-130 segments, and are internal parasites of dogs, goats, rabbits, crocodiles, snakes, frogs, and seagulls. Those that parasitize the lungs are cylindrical, while those that parasitize the nasal cavity are flattened dorsoventrally. The cephalothorax consists of three unclear segments, and has two pairs of clawed warts. The torso has many superficial segments. They have no circulatory or respiratory systems. They mate and lay eggs inside the host's body, but the eggs enter the intermediate host (small mammals, amphibians, or fish), leave the eggshell, become the first stage larvae, and grow while molting inside the host's body. When the intermediate host is eaten by a larger animal, the eggs move from the stomach to the nasal cavity, lungs, trachea, intestines, etc. Approximately 70 species are known. Their body structure indicates an affinity to millipedes and arthropods, but recent molecular analysis has led to the suggestion that they should be considered a group of arthropods.
