…An ecumenical council held in Ephesus, Asia Minor, in 449. It was also called the “robber council.” It was held the previous year to discuss the issue of Eutyches, who had been declared a heretic for his Monophysitism. The Monophysite Bishop Dioscorus of Alexandria dominated the council by force, and passed a resolution to restore Eutyches and dismiss the Bishop of Constantinople, Flaviano (Flavianus), and others, proclaiming the victory of Monophysitism. However, with the sudden death of Emperor Theodosius II, the Church’s trend changed, and the Council of Chalcedon (451) annulled the name of the council and all of the decisions of the Council of Ephesus. …
