A sponge of the family Polypodidae in the class Hexactinellidae (illustration). This deep-sea sponge has been found at depths of 300-500m in Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay. It stands in the mud on the seabed with a long siliceous thread stalk (hasoku) protruding from its cylindrical body 10-15cm in height, and reaches a total length of 50-80cm. It was so named because the stalk resembles a whisk carried by monks. The upper end of the body is flat with a cribriform plate, which covers the large stomach cavity inside the body. The stomach cavity is divided into four chambers by radially arranged partitions. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
