A sponge of the family Polypodidae in the class Hexactinellidae (illustration). This deep-sea sponge has been found at depths of 300-500m in Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay. It stands in the mud on the seabed with a long siliceous thread stalk (hasoku) protruding from its cylindrical body 10-15cm in height, and reaches a total length of 50-80cm. It was so named because the stalk resembles a whisk carried by monks. The upper end of the body is flat with a cribriform plate, which covers the large stomach cavity inside the body. The stomach cavity is divided into four chambers by radially arranged partitions.

六放カイメン綱ホッスガイ科の海綿動物（イラスト）。深海に産するカイメンで，相模湾や駿河湾の水深300～500mから得られている。高さ10～15cmの円筒状の体から長い珪糸（けいし）の柄(把束（はそく）)をだして海底の泥中に立ち，全長50～80cmになる。この柄が僧のもつ払子（ほつす）に似ているというのでこの名がある。体の上端は平らで篩状（しじよう）板があり，体内の広い胃腔をおおっている。胃腔は放射状に並ぶ隔壁で四つの室に分かれている。
