Anis was a poet active during the reign of the Sultanate of Oudh in India, and together with his contemporary Mirzā Dabīr, he is considered one of the greatest poets of the Marsia, a historical poem about martyrdom. Born in Faizabad, Anis's family had been famous poets for generations, from his great-grandfather Zahiq to his grandfather Mir Hasan to his father Khaliq, and he too learned poetry from his father. The Marsia, which is based on the theme of the martyrdom of the third Shiite Imam, Husayn, was improved in form and recitation in the 1830s, and it was Anis and Dabīr who perfected the technique.

インドのアウド王国治下に活躍した詩人で，同時代のダビールMirzā Dabīrと共に殉教史詩マルシアMarsiaの最高峰に位置づけられている。ファイザーバードで生まれたアニースの家系は，曾祖父のザーヒク，祖父のミール･ハサン，父のハリークと代々著名な詩人であり，彼もまた父親に詩作を学んだ。シーア派第3代イマーム，フサインの殉教を主題にしたマルシアは，1830年代になって形式と朗唱法が改良されたが，これを技法的に完成させたのがアニースとダビール両詩人である。
