1651‐89 Mystic, poet and prophet from Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland). He wrote many poems during his impressionable childhood, despite his poor health. He gave up on university, but came across the works of Boehme in the Netherlands. He learned that Boehme was the last European prophet to see the mysteries of the end times, and became convinced of the unity of all religions, academic disciplines, sects and worldviews, and the arrival of a golden age of lilies and roses. Exiled from his homeland, he wandered through England, the Netherlands and France, and even made it to Turkey, dreaming of reconciliation with Islam, before pinning his hopes on Russia, where he was burned at the stake in Moscow.
