An exclave of Angola located at the mouth of the Congo River in central Africa. It is separated from the mainland of Angola by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) territory, which is about 30 kilometers wide. It has an area of about 7,270 square kilometers, a population of about 84,000 (1974), and an urban area population of 718,915 (2019 estimate). The main city is Cabinda. The Portuguese arrived in the late 15th century, and a fort was built in the 16th century. It was officially recognized as an exclave of Portuguese West Africa (now Angola) by the Treaty of Berlin in 1885. It became part of Angola after independence in 1975. The land is generally flat, with an annual rainfall of 800 to 1,600 mm, and tropical forests remain in various places, and this timber is the main export. Oil was also discovered on the continental shelf off the coast in 1967, and is currently under development. In agriculture, the development of commercial crops such as cacao, oil palm, and groundnuts is progressing. The majority of the population is the Cabindan people of Bantu descent, and their educational level is relatively high.
