Aoki Rosui

A haiku poet and ukiyo-zoshi author from the early Edo period. He appears to have studied haiku under Ito Shintoku, but he also respected Matsuo Basho, and in the postscript to the Kairin Ryozaishu (1697), he states that Basho is the Japanese Du Fu and the modern Saigyo. However, there is no evidence that he tried to imitate Basho's haiku. A man of many talents, he worked as a haiku and miscellaneous haiku judge, while also publishing numerous books on haiku etiquette and leaving behind around five ukiyo-zoshi. 江戸前期の俳人,浮世草子作者。俳諧は伊藤信徳門下であったようだが松尾芭蕉を尊敬し,元禄10(1697)年跋の『誹林良材集』の中で,芭蕉は日本の杜甫であり今の西行だと述べている。しかし芭蕉の俳諧に倣おうとした形跡はない。多才な人で,俳諧や雑俳の点者として活躍しながら数々の俳諧作法書を刊行し,浮世草子も5部ほど残している。さらに仮名遣いや故事,成語の研究書もある。しかし,いずれの方面においても大をなすに至らなかった。<参考文献>小川武彦編著『青木鷺水集』別巻
