Around 1200 - 76 Founder of the Ahmadiyya sect, Egypt's most influential Islamic mystical sect (tariqa). Said to be from a family descended from the Prophet Muhammad. Born in Fes, Morocco, he made a pilgrimage to Mecca as a child. He then lived in Iraq before moving to Tanta, a town in the Egyptian Delta. He worked as a Sufi there until his death in 1276. His successors founded the Ahmadiyya sect, and a festival called Mawlid, celebrating the anniversary of his death, came to be held at his tomb in the town of Tanta.
