1846‐84 Italian painter active in France. Born in Barletta, a town on the Adriatic coast in southern Italy, he attended art school in Naples. He had a strong interest in realism and joined a group known as the Resina School, conducting research into light outdoors. He met the Macchiaioli theorist Cecchioni, who had come to Naples, and travelled to Florence in 1866, where he developed ties with the group, but the following year he moved to Paris in search of further growth. There he came into contact with Manet and the Impressionists, and was deeply influenced by their themes of modern life. He exhibited at the first Impressionist exhibition (1874), but, due to his attachment to the Salon (official exhibition), he did not participate in any subsequent exhibitions.
