...Population: 478,000 (1993). In 1871, the two villages of Ivanovo and Voznesensky were merged and called Ivanovo-Voznesensk until 1932. The land was given to the brother of Ivan IV's wife in the 16th century, and passed through several noble families. In 1741, the first peasant-run linen factory was opened, and the products were sold on the British market.
