...Performance groups and locations were fluid, and in 1961 George Maciunas came up with the idea of Fluxus, a magazine for performance art (the magazine never came to fruition), which eventually became the name of an international organization that linked performers across the board. The word Fluxus, a play on the Latin word fluxus meaning "flow" and the English word flux us (to fuse us together), was appropriate for the fluid relationships among performers at the time. The same can be said for the activities of artists exhibiting at the Yomiuri Independent Exhibition (Japan Independent Exhibition), which was lively due to the stimulation of the New York art world, and for the various art groups that gradually began to form in Japan through the intermediation of Ichiyanagi Toshi and Ono Yoko, who studied under Cage. Group Ongaku (Kosugi Takehisa, Tone Yasunao, Shiomi Chieko, and others), Neo Dadaism Organizers (Shinohara Ushio, Yoshimura Masunobu, Kazakura Shosaku, and others), and Hi Red Center (Akasegawa Genpei, Nakanishi Natsuyuki, Takamatsu Jiro, and others), which was formed by members of the train performance Yamanote Line Incident in October 1962 and the street performance First Mixer Project in May 1963, all founded in 1960, not only had mutual relationships with each other, but also with Hijikata Tatsumi of Butoh, the experimental film group Van Film Science Institute (Adachi Masao, and others), and with the overseas Fluxus movement in a cross-sectional manner.
