The name of a maki-e technique. Nashiji was originally made as a base for maki-e. Gold powder is sprinkled over a black or vermilion lacquer, and after drying, transparent lacquer is applied. The gold powder is visible through the lacquer, resembling the skin of a pear, hence the name. It began in the Kamakura period. E-nashiji is an application of this technique in maki-e patterns, and was developed in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. It is often seen in Kodaiji maki-e, where E-nashiji is arranged within Hira-maki-e to enhance the color effect.
