Yosuke - Raijo

Japanese: 頼助 - らいじょ
Yosuke - Raijo
Year of death: 6/9/1119 (7/18/1119)
Year of birth: Tenki 2 (1054)
A Nara Buddhist sculptor from the late Heian period. He is said to have been the grandson of Jocho and the son or disciple of Kakusuke. He is recorded as the "Temple (Kofuku-ji) Buddhist sculptor" when he restored and repaired the statues at Kofuku-ji Temple that were burned down in 1096, and was ordained as Hokkyo at the time of the memorial service for the reconstruction in 1103. He is also known to have been involved in the creation of many other statues, including repairing statues at the temple in 1110 and creating the Kasuga West Pagoda Buddha in 1116. On the other hand, during the curse on Emperor Shirakawa by the Kofuku-ji monks in 1118, he was suspected of creating a statue of Acalanatha Bodhisattva for the curse, but was later found innocent. Since he was mainly active in Nara, mainly at Kofuku-ji Temple, the lineage following Yosuke is called the Nara Buddhist sculptor.

Year of birth: 1246
A Shingon Buddhist monk of the late Kamakura period. Son of the regent Hojo Tsunetoki. Sasame Daisojo. In 1283, he became the first monk of Hojo descent to be appointed as the head priest of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, a position he held until his death. In 1294 (according to one theory, the 5th year of Shoo), he was appointed head priest of Todaiji Temple, and rose to the rank of Daisojo, but he remained in Kamakura, based at Sasame Ishin-in Temple in Kamakura, which he inherited from his teacher, Moriumi. In his later years, he devoted himself to rituals at the residence of regent Sadatoki, and in 1293 (the 1st year of Einin), he performed the Daihokuto-ho ritual in the palace, with his disciple Shingen acting as a substitute, and his activities are detailed in the Shingen Sojo Diary. <References> Yuyama Manabu, "Yorisuke and His School" (Kamakura, No. 39)
