Edgar Huntley

…Born into a Quaker merchant family in Philadelphia, he studied law, but became a prolific writer, starting with the publication of A Treatise on the Rights of Women in 1797. His four best-known novels are Wieland (1798), Edgar Huntly, Ormond, and Arthur Marvin (all 1799). The first two are adaptations of the Gothic romance style that was popular in England at the end of the 18th century to the American setting, and are considered to be the forerunners of the Gothic tradition in American literature that continues to this day. …
