Black barnacle (English name) Tetraclita japonica

Japanese: クロフジツボ（英語表記）Tetraclita japonica

A marine animal of the order Sessile of the class Gnathopoda, family Polytrichum. A large species, with a shell diameter of 4cm and height of 3.5cm. The shell surface is dark purple-gray. The shell consists of four plates, but as it ages, the boundaries between the shell plates become unclear and the shell opening opens wide. It grows in colonies on rocky reefs in the upper intertidal zone, without overlapping each other. It is distributed from northern Honshu to the Ryukyu Islands, and includes the blue-green southern black barnacle T. squamosa and the reddish-purple Taiwan black barnacle T. formosana , which have different shell colors, ridges, and shell opening sizes.
