Red spotted crab (English name: Neopetrolisthes maculatus)

Japanese: アカホシカニダマシ（英語表記）Neopetrolisthes maculatus

Order Decapoda, Class Malacostraca, Family Ploceidae (→ Ploceidae). There is one genus and one species, but some say it is divided into several species. It is widely distributed from Okinawa Prefecture southwards to Australia and East Africa, where a pair of males and females live among the tentacles of the sea anemone and the warty sea anemone on coral reefs. The carapace is about 1cm wide and slightly elongated. The surface of the carapace is slightly curved and smooth and shiny like pottery. The rostrum is broad and flat. The body is uniformly milky white, with many small round purple-red spots on the carapace, chelipeds and walking legs, but there is considerable variation in the size and number of spots. 軟甲綱十脚目カニダマシ科（→カニダマシ）。1属 1種であるが，数種に分ける説もある。沖縄県以南，オーストラリア，東アフリカまで広く分布し，サンゴ礁のハタゴイソギンチャクやイボハタゴイソギンチャクの触手の間に雌雄一対ですみついている。甲幅約 1cm，甲はやや縦長。甲面は，弱く湾曲し，陶器のようになめらかで光沢がある。額角は広く扁平。体は一様に乳白色で，甲，鋏脚，歩脚に紫赤色の小さな丸い斑紋が多数あるが，斑紋の大きさ，数には変異が著しい。（→甲殻類，十脚類，節足動物，軟甲類）
