…In the Ise Nagashima Rebellion of 1874, Nobunaga's thorough siege led to the death of more than half of the followers, and even though peace was concluded with the surrender of the rebels, he shot at the surviving followers as they were leaving by boat, and then forced 20,000 men and women into a stockade and burned them all to death. In the Echizen Rebellion of 1876, Maeda Toshiie carried out cruel executions against many of his followers, including crucifixion and boiling in a pot. This fact is inscribed in beautiful calligraphy on a roof tile unearthed in Takefu City, Fukui Prefecture, and conveys the horrific situation to the present day. …

... Driven into a difficult situation, Hongan-ji Temple concluded a second peace treaty. In January of the following year, the Echizen Ikki took advantage of internal strife among the generals on Nobunaga's side to gain control of the entire province, and Hongan-ji Temple sent Shimotsuma Raisho down to the province as deputy governor. The peace treaty was then broken in April, and Nobunaga's offensive continued. ...

…74年の伊勢長島一揆では，信長の徹底した包囲作戦によって門徒の過半が餓死し，一揆側の降伏によって講和が結ばれたにもかかわらず，生き残った門徒が船で退出するところを銃撃し，さらに2万人の男女を柵内に押しこめ，ことごとく焼き殺した。76年の越前一揆では，前田利家が多数の門徒に対して磔，釜ゆでなど残虐な処刑を行った。この事実は，福井県武生市から出土した文字瓦に達筆な字体で刻まれ，悲惨な状況を今に伝えている。…
