In 1587 (Tensho 15), Toyotomi Hideyoshi invaded Kyushu, defeated Shimazu Yoshihisa, and forced him to surrender, thus pacifying the entire Kyushu region. Hideyoshi aimed to unify the country, and in 1589, he made peace with Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, achieving dominance over the central region. In the following year, he invaded Shikoku and defeated the Chosokabe clan. At the time, Otomo Sorin of Bungo and Shimazu Yoshihisa of Satsuma were competing for supremacy in Kyushu, but after the Otomo clan was defeated in the Battle of Hyuga Mimigawa in 1593, the Shimazu clan gained the upper hand. In 1589, Shimazu Yoshihisa sent troops to approach the Otomo clan's base, so in March of the following year, Otomo Sorin asked Hideyoshi for help. Hideyoshi urged Shimazu Yoshihisa to make peace, but Yoshihisa did not accept it, so in December of the same year, he issued an order to the Kinai, Nankai, Hokuriku, Tokai, Tosan, San'in, and San'yo regions, and raised an army to conquer Kyushu. In January of the following year, 15th year, Hideyoshi gathered his generals in Osaka, and in March of the same year, he entered Kyushu, with a total of 250,000 troops. In May of the same year, he entered Satsuma, and Yoshihisa suffered a series of defeats. The Shimazu clan was granted the territories of Satsuma, Hyuga, and Osumi, and Hideyoshi's subjugation of Kyushu was completed.
