A feudal system of large land ownership introduced by the Dutch West India Company to the colony of New Netherland in North America. In order to encourage immigration, in 1629 the company established a system of granting large tracts of land to investors who sent 50 settlers within four years. The system was a "permanently inherited fief," and the lords (called patroons) had privileges such as feudal jurisdiction. Even after the colony was annexed by Britain in 1664 to become the Colony of New York, the British lords continued to establish a large land ownership system modeled after the remaining patroons in Rensselaerswick and other colonies, so the patroons system continued until it was dissolved by the anti-rent struggle of the 1840s.
