A bicyclic monoterpene ketone. Found in camphor trees, it is obtained by steam distillation of wood fragments. Currently, it is mainly obtained by synthesis from pinene. It is a colorless, transparent, sublimable plate-like crystal with a distinctive fragrance. Its melting point is 178°C and boiling point is 209°C. In addition to being the raw material for celluloid, it is also used in medicine (where it is called camphor), as an insect repellent, and in fragrances.
