A full-length novel by Russian author F. Dostoevsky. Published in 1872. The direct motivation for writing this novel was the "Nechayev Incident" in 1869, in which Ivanov, a student at Moscow's Agricultural University, offered to leave a revolutionary secret society and was brutally murdered by his comrades, led by Nechayev. The story was based on this incident and the characters in it. At the heart of the novel is the theme of "atheism," which the author had been nurturing for some time. The novel is an extremely original work, with magnificent artistic depictions of Stepan, an idealistic liberal from the 1940s; his student Stavrogin, a superhuman type with demonic intellect and contradictory ideas; Stepan's son Peter, leader of the Gang of Five; Shatov, who is assassinated as a traitor; and Kirillov, who preaches the idea of man as a god and tries to become a god by committing suicide.Evil spiritSource: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
