The League of Wallonia, a southern province of the Netherlands, was formed in 1579. It later became the basis for the Kingdom of Belgium. It agreed to a peace treaty with Spain, reaffirming the Catholic faith and Spanish rule. In response, the Union of Utrecht was formed in the same year, and the southern and northern provinces of the Netherlands were decisively divided.
