Also called the labor force ratio or labor population ratio. It refers to the ratio of the labor force to the working-age population. The labor force participation rate is the ratio of people who are participating in economic activity as labor among the working-age population, and is generally said to be lower in developed countries, and lower in higher income brackets when broken down by household finances and region. In the long term, the labor force participation rate for young people has been declining due to the rise in the rate of progression to higher education, while the labor force participation rate for middle-aged women, mainly housewives, has been on the rise. The labor force participation rate for older people has shown a slight upward trend after a temporary decline. 労働力比率,労働力人口比率ともいう。生産年齢人口に対する労働力人口の比率をさす。労働力率は,生産年齢に達している人口のうち,労働力として経済活動に参加している者の比率であって,一般に先進国ほど低く,また家計や地域別にみると所得の高い層ほど低いといわれている。長期的にみると,進学率の上昇により若年者の労働力率は低下し,主婦を中心とする中年女性の労働力率は上昇傾向にある。高年齢者は,一時の低下からやや上昇の傾向をみせている。
