Takeshi Hayashi

Western-style painter. Born December 10, 1896 in Tokyo to the Japanese classical scholar Hayashi Mikaomi. His real name was Takeomi. He entered the Japan Art School in 1920 (Taisho 9) but dropped out. In 1928, he was selected for the Nikaten Exhibition for the first time and won the Chogyu Prize, and the following year he received the Nika Prize. In 1931, he became a member of the association and a friend of the Nikakai, but in 1930 (Showa 5), ​​he founded the Independent Art Association with his comrades and was active in the association until his death. From 1934 to 1935, he traveled to France and toured various parts of Europe. His works produced while in Europe, such as Coiffuse, show the influence of Cubism. After the Second World War, he exhibited Combing Woman at the Art Organizations Union Exhibition in 1949 (Showa 24), and won the first Mainichi Art Award. He also taught the next generation of artists as a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts from 1952 to 1963. He won the Taishu Prize at the Contemporary Japanese Art Exhibition in 1981, and was awarded the Japan Art Academy Prize in 1984. He was also active as a member of the International Figurative Exhibition, and received the Asahi Prize and the Order of Culture in 1967. In 1971, he became chairman of the Council for National Language Issues. He had his own unique theory of composition, and was known as a warrior of the concrete style in the Western painting world. He died in Tokyo on June 23, 1975.

洋画家。明治29年12月10日東京に国学者林甕臣(みかおみ)の子として生まれる。本名は武臣(たけおみ)。1920年(大正9)日本美術学校に入学するが、中退。21年二科展に初入選で樗牛(ちょぎゅう)賞を受け、続いて翌年二科賞を受ける。26年に一九三〇年協会会員、二科会会友となるが、30年(昭和5)同志と独立美術協会を創立し、没するまで同会で活躍した。34~35年渡仏し、ヨーロッパ各地を巡遊。『コワフューズ』ほか滞欧作にキュビスムの影響を示す。第二次世界大戦後は、49年(昭和24)美術団体連合展に『梳(くしけず)る女』を出品し、第1回毎日美術賞を受賞。また、52~63年には東京芸術大学教授として後進を指導する。56年現代日本美術展で大衆賞を受賞し、59年には日本芸術院賞を贈られる。国際形象展同人としても活躍し、67年朝日賞と文化勲章を受けた。71年国語問題協議会会長となる。独自の構成理論をもち、洋画界における具象系の闘将として知られた。昭和50年6月23日東京で没。
