The southernmost island of the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. Its area is 326.34 square kilometers. Administratively, it belongs to Goto City. In the southeast of the island, the mortar-shaped volcanoes (Homate) group, including Ondake, Hinodake, and Midake, and the low-lying platform volcano with Tadakariyama in Tomie as its eruption point, erupt, forming peninsulas, while in the northwest, the shield volcano (Aspite) of Kyonotake erupts, forming the Miiraku peninsula. The center of the island is a granite zone with the Yamanouchi erosion basin, where the Wani River, one of the longest rivers in Nagasaki Prefecture, cuts the lava plateau of Kishiku in the lower reaches to form a canyon. The northern part of the island is a ria coast with inlets such as Okunoura Bay, Tosennoura Bay, and Shiroishiura Bay, and the southwestern part of the island also shows a remarkable drowned valley topography, with the inlet of Tamanoura Bay. On the west side of the bay is Shimayama Island, which is bridged, and within the bay is the Nanaura Cove. At Osezaki, facing the East China Sea, sea cliffs 50 to 100 meters high stretch for 20 kilometers, creating a magnificent landscape. As it was a port of call for Japanese envoys sent to the Tang Dynasty, there are many historical sites related to this. It was also a place of Christian faith, and cathedrals were built all over the island. They still serve as religious centers for the villages today, and many churches have been designated as national or prefectural cultural properties. One area has been designated a national natural monument as it is the northernmost area where ferns grow naturally. National Route 384 runs through the island, and regular ferns run from Fukue Port to Nagasaki Port and various parts of Goto. Fukue Airport has flights to Nagasaki Airport and Fukuoka Airport. Population: 39,096 (2009).
