Born on July 2, 1851. Son of Kami Sanetake. Joined the Gagaku Bureau of the Dajokan in 1870. In 1881, he was appointed as an instructor at the Music Investigation Department, and in 1917, became the conductor of the Gagaku Department of the Imperial Household Ministry. He also studied Western music under Fenton and others, worked on editing the "Elementary School Song Collection," and composed songs such as "Tencho-bushi," "Railway Song," and "Jan. 17."
